Seizing the opportunity: Transforming the BBC for the AI age

October 9, 2024

10:45 a.m.

LOCATION

National Arts Centre, Elgin Street, Ottawa, ON, Canada

DESCRIPTION

In this keynote speech and moderated chat, Tim Davie, Director-General of the BBC, assesses the very essence of modern public service media.

The Royal Charter is unequivocal: "The Mission of the BBC is to act in the public interest, serving all audiences through the provision of impartial, high-quality and distinctive output and services which inform, educate and entertain."

But in such a fast-evolving media landscape, in the Age of Social Media and New Platforms, a Sea of Content, and now AI, how does the world's oldest public service broadcaster pursue and achieve such an ambitious mission? How will the BBC continue to stay relevant at home and abroad? What can the BBC – and public service media everywhere – do that others simply can't do or won't do? What makes the BBC indispensable in 2024, 2030, and beyond?

In short, what makes the BBC matter? And how can we, collectively, make the case for public service media in the AI age?
