DESCRIPTION

Public service media can be powerful partners in revitalizing Indigenous languages. They can broadcast news and stories daily, provide online platforms that can reach communities wherever they live, and complement language promotion initiatives led by governments and Indigenous Peoples themselves. This role is critical, especially after years of language eradication and cultural assimilation policies.

Natan Obed, president of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, will discuss the reality of Inuktut, one of the Indigenous languages with the most speakers in Canada, and the importance of collaborating with public service media within Indigenous communities or wherever stories are told.
